SPILLARD SAFETY SYSTEMS CHOSEN AS SOLE SUPPLIER TO LIEBHERR-RENTAL

Following the formation of Liebherr-Rental in January this year, the company has chosen to fit its entire fleet of some 75 machines with safety equipment supplied and installed by Spillard Safety Systems of Wolverhampton.

Liebherr-Rental’s general manager Paul Clark said: “On-site safety is very high on our list of priorities and so we were keen to locate a reliable partner able to supply both the equipment and the level of expertise required to ensure the right combination of seat belts, seat belt lights, strobe lights, convex mirrors and rear-view camera and radar systems are correctly fitted to every machine.”

Mr. Clark first came across Spillard Safety Systems whilst working for another machinery supplier when the company came to his rescue at a Hillhead exhibition by fitting some equipment to satisfy the requirements of the show’s safety team. Mr. Clark was so impressed with the instant help he received that he looked no further when it came to choosing a supplier for Liebherr-Rental.

All the machines in the fleet are highly specified to meet the demands of a wide variety of applications such as waste and scrap handling, demolition and forestry as well as general earthmoving and civil engineering work and, besides the Spillard equipment ensuring that Liebherr-Rental meets all current health and safety regulations, it has the added bonus of providing a high level of operator comfort and confidence.

HANSON AGGREGATES CHOOSES SPILLARD SAFETY WHIPS FOR SITE VEHICLES

As part of its rigorous, on-going safety policy, Hanson Aggregates has equipped its growing fleet of JCB Groundhogs with 2m tall safety whips available from Spillard Safety System’s AllRoundAlert range of equipment.

Made from fibreglass and available in heights from 1.5 to 4 m, the whips are equipped with a bright coloured flag plus, if required, a series of LED flashing lights for maximum visibility during dull weather conditions powered through the vehicles cigarette lighter.

According to Dan Silvester, Hanson Aggregates’ supervisor at its Cley Hill Quarry: “The 6-wheel drive Groundhog is a brilliant vehicle for transporting engineers and their tools around the quarry as they are pretty much able to go anywhere and only use about 14 litre of fuel per week.”

However, because of the Groundhog’s diminutive size, concern was expressed by Hanson’s safety team over the ability of other operators on site to see them. This concern resulted in the purchase of the whips which are now securely fitted to each vehicle with a heavy duty stainless steel spring mount. The various quarry managers are now fully confident the Groundhogs can be easily spotted by the drivers of much larger machinery and so be used in complete safety.

In addition to the safety whips, Spillard’s AllRoundAlert range includes high intensity strobe and LED reversing lights, self-adjusting, white noise and talking reverse alarms and a variety of coloured strobe beacons.

CANCER CHARITY BENEFITS FROM SPILLARD PROMOTION

Spillard Safety Systems of Gailey in Staffordshire was delighted to recently present a cheque for £625.00 to the Hydrex Cancer Research fund raising appeal, much of which was raised during this year’s Hillhead exhibition where the company requested a donation of £1 for every metre safety stick given away during the course of the three day event.

The sticks, normally given away free at exhibitions by Spillard, are designed to be used to identify driver blind spots from the cabs of all types of mobile plant used in both the construction and quarrying industries in order to arrive at the best possible combination of mirrors and rear-view cameras to ensure maximum on-site safety.

Commenting on the donation, managing director Pete Spillard said:” We have given away over 10,000 of the rulers free of charge, Hillhead gave us the opportunity to provide this service whilst raising money for this worthwhile cause and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who made donation at Hillhead.

NEW PARTNERSHIP FORMED BETWEEN SPILLARD SAFETY SYSTEMS AND SEARS SEATING

Spillard Safety Systems of Gailey in Staffordshire has further extended its long-standing co-operation with Sears Seating  by becoming the sole UK distributor for its new vibration monitoring system (VMS).

This system has been developed to help quarry managers comply with the latest EU directive (EU Physical Agents Directive or PAD) on whole body vibration which came into force throughout Europe on July 6th covering both existing and new mobile equipment.

VMS utilises sensors placed within a plant operator’s seat to monitor vertical, lateral and horizontal vibrations, with an in-cab visual display showing the relative vibrations in real time as well as cumulative exposure. In addition, the data is logged for later downloading to enable detailed analysis to be undertaken as required. This information is now vital to enable quarry operators to monitor and then restrict the exposure to vibration of quarry personnel to specified limits per eight hour day.

Commenting on the appointment, managing director Pete Spillard said: “I am delighted we have been given this new opportunity to reinforce our already excellent relationship with Sears. The new vibration monitoring system system is a cost-effective solution to enable equipment owners to meet the provisions of the new directives and we will be able to contribute a wealth of installation experience to the partnership.”

SPILLARD WIRELESS CCTV SYSTEMS CUTS MANPOWER REQUIRED TO LOAD SCRAP METAL AT LIVERPOOL DOCKS

Spillard Safety Systems of Gailey in Staffordshire has equipped a pair of Liebherr R984 120 tonne ship loaders with wireless CCTV systems to enable the operators to accurately and safely load prepared scrap metal into ship’s holds at Liverpool Docks without the need for banksmen.

The two machines form part of a large fleet of equipment operated by S. Norton & Co, one of the UK’s leading metal processing and recycling organisations currently exporting hundreds of thousands of tonnes of scrap metal per annum, principally to the Far East.

Loading 40,000 – 50,000 tonne capacity ships at a rate of approximately two per month, the pair of Liebherr machines can now distribute loose and baled scrap evenly within the holds for maximum stability and without causing any contact damage to the ship – a main concern of Nortons. This accuracy is achieved by the operators being able to clearly see the clamshell grab attachments when lowered into the ships hold on the screens of cab-mounted

colour monitors. The crisp images from cameras temporarily mounted to hatch combings are transmitted through  5.8Ghz wireless systems. The 5.8Ghz frequency will support additional channels should further machines be added to the company’s fleet in the future.

According to S. Norton’s operations manager Dave Matthews: “We have been using Spillard equipment on some of our other mobile plant for several years and so were very happy to install these new wireless CCTV systems which are proving perfect for the job and have saved the cost of the extra staff that used to act as ‘spotters’ for the crane drivers.”

SPILLARD OPTRONICS SYSTEM STANDS THE TEST OF TIME

Whilst undertaking a safety survey of mobile plant seats and door retaining catches on behalf of Tarmac at its Ballidon Quarry near Ashbourne in Derbyshire, Vic Spillard of Spillard Safety Systems was delighted to discover one the company’s older Optronics rear-view colour camera systems still in excellent working order on a skid steer loader.

On checking records held at Spillard’s Staffordshire offices, the Tarmac rear-view system was found to be of 2001 vintage and had originally been installed on a 50 tonne dump truck prior to its move to the diminutive skid steer machine in 2003.

The records also showed that only one fault had ever been reported on the system which was traced to the power distribution box, replaced under warranty at the time of the swop between machines.

Commenting on the find, Spillard’s managing director Pete Spillard said: “We have always promoted the high quality of our safety equipment and its ability to cope with tough environments and this 6 year old rear-view system is a great example of the robust nature of our Optronics systems.”

Part of the Anglo American plc group, Tarmac takes great pride in its safety record, assisted by the development of its ‘Golden Rules’ strategy designed to promote high level of safety awareness throughout its UK operations.
